Edward J. O'Hare: An Honorary Untouchable?

It's true if author Jonathan Eig is to be believed. According to his new book "Get Capone" Eig suggests that the late Edward O'Hare was murdered by gangster Al Capone. What was Capone's motive, you ask. There are two sides to every argument one being that O'Hare was murdered as a sort of gift for Capone who was getting out of prison shortly. The other, Eig's, claims that he was murdered because he wouldn't share the profits from his racetrack.

Eventually O'Hare had provided invaluable information to the Treasury Department, information that lead to Capone being tossed in the slammer for 11 years. In exchange for the priceless information O'Hare's son, Edward "Butch" O'Hare was given admission to the U.S. Naval Academy. Butch O'Hare became a decorated war hero but was later killed in the line of duty.

This is major news considering that fact that the Chicago Police Department has decided to reopen the case. Apparently Alderman Edward Burke, a former officer on the force, is spearheading the campaign to relaunch the 70+ year old investigation. I'm really eager to read this book. I'm a notsosecret history buff and I'm completely in love with all things gangland!

Trivia: Chicago's O'Hare Airport is named for Edward "Butch" O'Hare.
